this week's share

This is the basket with this week's share from our CSA, Two Small Farms.

We got: spinach, kale, strawberries, basil, green onions, cauliflower, salad mix, summer squash

I'm planning to make a bunch of recipes from my newest cookbook, Alternative Vegan by Dino Sarma (available from Tofu Hound Press, home of the Vegan Freaks). The spinach and cauliflower will get an Indian-style spiced treatment, and I'll make some brown basmati saffron rice and lentils to go with it. I also have two green plantains from Trader Joe's, and will probably use another recipe from Alternative Vegan (Indian-style, again) for those. Or I might use the plantains (grilled?) along with a squash/tomato/corn saute and some rice & beans for a Latin American-style meal.

I feel so lucky to participate in this wonderful CSA farm share. And I want to thank the farmers of Two Small Farms and all the people who make the farm share possible (coordinators, generous drop-off site hosts, other CSA members), as well as Dino, author of this great new cookbook, and Bob and Jenna (the Vegan Freaks). Being a part of these communities enriches my life immensely.

planning ahead

My partner and I belong to a wonderful CSA (community-supported agriculture) called Two Small Farms. Every week we get a box filled with the most amazing produce, and we do our very best to cook it up (or eat it raw). But school and work can often interfere with our best intentions. I'm lucky to live in Santa Cruz where there are so many convenient choices for vegans who don't have the time to cook. But the convenient route can certainly be both expensive and less than healthy. Now that my school semester is over, I find myself with the free time I've been craving. And this Memorial Day weekend (three days off work!) I got the opportunity to cook up lots of our beautiful, delicious, healthy produce. So now we have several dinners prepared to get us through the workweek. Hooray!

welcome

Welcome to the Vegan Librarian blog!

This blog used to be The Strict Vegetarian on Wordpress.

I'll be sharing my thoughts and experiences regarding everyday vegan living and libraries. Strange combo? Not for me. Both of these topics are not only a major part of my daily life but also ways of cooperating in our world through the sharing of resources and information.

I hope you'll share your thoughts here as well.
